cosmo! i loved you when i was younger—now not so much.
I. NEEDING AN OUT
Hello,
My name is Adelina Malito. I am a twenty-four year old, graduated English major who lives in Erie, Pa. Last week I broke up with my boyfriend of over a year. Trying not to sound melodramatic, but it has been the toughest thing for me to deal with in years. He was younger than I was and was my world. And how it ended crushed me.
One of the things that I have done since the break up is read Cosmo. It has made me laugh and brought be back from some of the darker days. I was wondering if there was any room to either write on the website as a blogger or maybe in the magazine. Write about my experience with dating younger and maybe things to look out for. Or just writing anything that is there to write about. Many of the articles have an underlying theme about boys and relationships, that my twenty-four years of experience could be a benefit too.
I have past experience with writing and editing and this could be what I need to get my mind off of this and to move on. I have spent the last year waiting around for him to finish college so that we could start a life together. Now I am trying to start a life on my own, my own way without someone supporting me.
If this is at all a possibility then I would take anything that is offered to me. A resume can be sent in a matter of minutes. :-)
Thank you for the opportunity. And if nothing else, thank you for publishing a magazine that has kept me smiling.

II. A RESPONSE
Cosmopolitan is the largest magazine in the world and does not consider itself a starting point for writers. If you have a good set of published clips and a strong idea that you think would fit in Cosmo, you may send your pitch to youtellcosmo@hearst.com, with Story Pitch in the subject line. An editor will then get in touch if we’re interested in your idea. If you’d like to send a résumé to Hearst Human Resources for a full-time position at Cosmopolitan, you may send it to: Hearst Magazines, Human Resources Department, 300 West 57th St., New York, NY 10019-3791. Due to the large volume of résumés received by Hearst HR, only candidates of interest will be contacted for specific positions.
Thanks!
Cosmo
III. IRRITATION
Dear Cosmo,
I apologize for not realizing that your magazine is not a starting point for writers. With the quality of reporting that is done in the magazine I can see where I went wrong asking for a chance.
With the newspaper and magazine industry going down the tubes I am also thankful that this magazine is not being hit with a drop in readership. I also didn’t truly realize how articles about, “What underwear will make him hot” or “How to satisfy yourself in bed” were of such scholarly aptitude that little me would not be able to not only fit in but have nothing to write about. I guess only take the best writers are chosen that will really get the inside scope on all of these pressing issues. But how does the New Yorker feel about all their writers being taken from them??
Now what I came to realize is that you might have a role for me in the largest magazine in the world. I think that possibly the editing staff there at headquarters is in need of someone to send out rejection letters. Lets face it, that email response was a computer generated load of crap. I think a personalized letter of rejection would be classier, especially since this is the largest magazine in the world. And I am just the girl to do it.
Think about it.
